HAMMOND | An elderly woman died Sunday after she was hit by a vehicle while she crossed the street in Hammond.
The woman died on the way to the hospital after the crash about 11:15 a.m. Sunday outside the Walgreens at 4445 Calumet Ave., Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.
Emergency workers made a "fantastic attempt" to save the woman's life, Miller said.
Neither Miller nor a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office identified the woman Sunday night. Coroner's officials still were trying to reach the woman's relatives late Sunday night. Miller would say only that the victim was an "elderly female."
The woman was crossing the street when the vehicle hit her, Miller said. The investigation continued Sunday night. Miller could not say Sunday night if investigators suspected speed or intoxication may have contributed to the accident.
