Toy fundraiser in Portage helps out pediatric center
PORTAGE | Old board games, dolls and other toys filled tables at the Portage parks department's second annual Kids' Resale Fundraiser.
Gloria Nystrom, the department's recreational programs director, said the sale on Saturday was a good way for kids to help other kids, with 10 percent of proceeds going to Jacob's Ladder, a pediatric rehabilitation service that helps physically challenged children. Not only did children man the more than a dozen booths, but all the items were tailored to their liking.
Lynn Perry said the sale was a good way for her daughters to give new life to some old toys.
"They like other things now," she said from behind a table filled with dolls and dress-up clothes. "That, and I got tired of seeing some of these on the floor."
Her youngest daughter, Hannah, 8, was busy shopping the other booths, snagging a few deals.
Girls from Girl Scout Troop 162 supervised another table with mom Micheline Stanley. She said the troop will use the profits to enjoy some time out.
"They'll use it to do fun stuff like going to the movies," Stanley said.
Nystrom said this year's sale had more than twice as many booths as last year, when the sale was held before Christmas.
"This year, we decided to wait until after Santa came, so they can clean out their closets and make room for their new toys," Nystrom said. "Last year, we raised $56.12 that was donated. It's not a lot, but Jacob's Ladder was really appreciative of the support."
