Authorities: Lansing man led police on chase that ended in crash
HAMMOND | A 38-year-old Lansing man will stand trial for bank robbery in connection with a September robbery in Munster that set off a chase across state lines ending in a fiery collision in Lansing.
During Kevin Dortch's jury trial -- scheduled to begin today in U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano's courtroom -- federal prosecutors are expected to present video evidence of the chase that began at the TCF Bank branch inside the Jewel-Osco at 716 Ridge Road and ended in a crash into a detached garage between a home at 3527 Lake St. and Beggar's Pizza in Lansing.
Prosecutors said before that collision, Dortch also crashed into a home, fled on to the roof of a residence and carjacked a minivan stopped at the light at Wentworth Avenue and Ridge Road.
Through it all, no bystanders were injured.
In April, the court found Dortch was mentally competent to stand trial after the defense had asked to make sure Dortch understands the nature and consequences of the criminal proceedings.
The motion, which Merrillville attorney Arlington J. Foley filed in October, said Dortch was unable to help prepare a defense and didn't appear to understand the court proceedings.
Dortch, who served prison time after a 1994 bank robbery conviction, also is a suspect in a series of bank robberies that began in June 2007 and are attributed to the "Cell Phone Bandit."
On Aug. 27, the FBI issued a flier describing a person wanted in connection with five bank robberies, beginning with a June 13 robbery of a TCF Bank branch in Chicago and ending with an Aug. 4 robbery of a TCF Bank branch in River Forest.
No charges have been filed in connection with those robberies.
