PORTER | A motorcyclist was killed when he crashed while trying to avoid a motorist who pulled out in front of him Sunday evening on U.S. 20, near Waverly Road, Porter police said.

The motorcyclist, Freddie L. Mullins, 62, of Michigan City, was taken to Porter Portage Hospital Campus after the crash, then was airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill. He was pronounced dead about three hours after the crash, which occurred at 6:38 p.m.

Assistant Chief Todd Allen, of the Porter Police Department, said Mullins was riding eastbound on U.S. 20 when a woman in a gold Saturn exited Porter Quick Stop, which is on the north side of the road. The woman drove south between vehicles and began going eastbound on U.S. 20.

Allen said the woman apparently didn't see Mullins. Police said Mullins swerved and was successful in avoiding a crash with the woman's car, but he slid into a ditch on the south side of the road.

Allen said a witness followed the woman in the Saturn and informed her that her actions resulted in a crash, but the woman apparently didn't believe the witness. Allen said police tracked down the woman and spoke with her Tuesday.

He said police will forward their findings to the Prosecutor's Office for consideration of charges, but he noted there was no contact between the woman's car and the motorcycle.
