GARY | A 12-year-old girl was shot in the face Saturday night by teenage boys angry over an argument near the girl's home in Gary, the girl's father said Sunday night.

The girl was talking with doctors and family members Sunday night at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, 24 hours after she was shot beneath her right eye Saturday night as she sat in a truck, prepared for a trip to a store, said her father, Matthew Turner, of Chicago. The boys who shot the girl were younger than 16 years old, Turner said.

"There was no reason. They were just shooting," Turner said.

"They need to get these guns away from these kids."

The boys were arguing Saturday night with the mother of a girl who lives near Turner's daughter, Turner said. The boys wanted to see that girl, but the girl's mother stopped them, Turner said. Meanwhile, Turner's daughter was sitting in the truck with her mother's boyfriend, Turner said.

The boys passed the truck, shouted a combative question and started shooting, Turner said. The bullet entered under his daughter's right eye and stopped near her left temple, Turner said.

Gary police could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
