The 23 students suspected of arriving intoxicated to the Lake Central High School prom soon will know the results of their expulsion hearings, a school official said Saturday.

The hearings concluded Thursday night and letters went out to the students via certified mail Friday, said Larry Veracco, director of personnel for the Lake Central School Corp.

Veracco declined to provide more detail about the result of the hearings.

The seniors took a chartered bus May 9 from the high school in St. John to their prom in Schererville at the Halls of St. George, 905 E. Joliet St. Administrators said they discovered the students were intoxicated and in possession of alcohol when one of the boys passed out.

The seniors were suspended by the school.

Schererville police closed the case without filing any charges. Police said because school officials handled most of the on-scene investigation, the incident should be an internal school matter.
