LAKE STATION: Councilman says city could generate thousands
LAKE STATION | The city is looking to generate more funds by passing ordinances that will allow Lake Station to follow city traffic laws instead of state traffic laws.
The majority of funds received from traffic violations currently goes to the state because the city follows state traffic laws, Councilman Keith Soderquist said.
He said the city receives a small portion of the funds, but if the council passes the new ordinances, the city will receive a majority of the money.
"It's a no-brainer," Soderquist said.
The council asked City Attorney Ray Szarmach during the council meeting Wednesday to write the new ordinances. The council will have to vote in favor of the ordinances before they are passed.
Councilman Rick Long said the money received from the violations would go into the city's general fund, and the funds could off set taxes.
Soderquist said passing the new ordinances could generate thousands of dollars, which he would like to see used to beautify the city.
