HOBART | Police on Tuesday planned to question a 22-year-old man believed to have taken part in the severe beating of a 21-year-old Hobart man.

The victim, who was beaten early Saturday morning with a baseball bat while in his front yard, was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon, a St. Mary Medical Center spokeswoman said.

The victim, who was hit numerous times on his head and body, is expected to fully recover, Hobart police Detective Jeff White said.

"There is no question they could have killed him," White said. "The most severe injuries were to his head."

White said the young man was in his yard when about 20 to 25 other young men arrived in three vehicles, jumped out and surrounded the victim.

"He didn't stand a chance," White said.

The beating, which may have been administered by more than one of the young men, was apparently over a girlfriend.

White said all of the men, including the suspect, apparently knew each other.

The men left the victim's front yard after his father came outside, White said.

Police initially had trouble getting information because of the victim's numerous injuries and because he had been sedated.

White said police planned to question the 22-year-old person of interest and also set up a photo lineup to further determine if he is the person responsible for the beating.

The baseball bat used in the beating was recovered at the victim's home, White said.
