my turn
Monee Fall Faire is here. It's tonight, Saturday and Sunday with a carnival, food vendors and a beer tent. A parade is at 10 a.m. Saturday, 5K run on Sunday. There are bean bag tourneys, a petting zoo and pony rides. And don't forget the classic car show. You know I can't miss that on Sunday.
* Don't forget Crete ParkaPalooza from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Park, 1550 Sangamon St. in Crete. Come out for Beep Baseball, sponsored by the Crete Lion's Club, bean bag tournaments, Touch-A-Truck, A Taste of Crete, Water Battle, ping-pong, a fun area for children, face painting, balloon art, Jumpies sponsored by First United Bank and live music.
* The Million Dollar Shoot Out starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cardinal Creek Golf Course, 615 Dixie Highway in Beecher. This year more than 20 participants are shooting for that million. Holes in one are extremely rare, and while it depends largely on the golfer's skill, even amateur players can get one. Join me cheering on these incredible athletes.
* Do you have a grandparent you want to make feel special? Grandparents Day is on Sunday. Grandparents are a gift and I wish I still had mine. Spend the day with yours at the First Apostolic Church, 22709 State St. in Steger, with guest speaker the Rev. Lloyd Dunaway. You will be treated to a free spaghetti dinner after the service.
For more information, call Renee at (708) 758-7536.
* Starting at 3 p.m. Sept. 13, in the K-Mart parking lot, Steger will have its own farmers market. I will be there helping my friend Heather from Witvoet-Dixon Produce sell tables full of sweet corn, melons, tomatoes and nectarines. Nature's Choice Farms, Eric Sexton will have fresh brown eggs and pasture fed whole and cut up fryers. The Steger Cub Scouts will be selling pop corn and Bambino's will sell hot dogs. Joe from Steger Florist will have some special mums brought in from Michigan just for this market. Look for wood products and maybe even a few surprises.
* You won't want to miss the open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Spooly's, 1379 Main St. in Crete. There will be a pumpkin kick-off at 9:30 a.m. with an incredible bench press demo on a bed of nails. Wow. You can count on me being there to see that at 11 a.m. For more information, call (708) 367-0707.
* How about a meet-and-greet with Washington Township Trustee Bob Howard from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Willard Woods Center, 515 First St. in Crete? John Anderson and Katrina Deutsch will be there as well to answer questions residents may have concerning local issues.
* Are you a fan of Buddy Holly? Catch the 2 p.m. performance on Sept. 24 of the Buddy Holly Story along with shopping and/or lunch at a variety of places along North Michigan Avenue or inside Water Tower Place. Rediscover your rock n' roll roots with classics like "Peggy Sue," "That'll Be the Day" and many more.
For more information, call Carolyn at (708) 748-2005. Register by Sept. 12.
