Man airlifted to hospital after bar fight

VALPARAISO | A rural Valparaiso man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of serious injuries he suffered in a fight at 3:40 a.m. Sunday outside Northside Tap, 612 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso police said.

The man is Dale Ribar, 27, of Morgan Township. Police said his injuries are serious, but are not believed to be life-threatening. Police said a second man was injured, but declined medical treatment.

Witnesses told police that others involved in the fight fled the scene. The investigation continues and police are asking witnesses or anyone else with information to call the department at (219) 462-2135.

Man charged in baseball bat attack

PORTAGE | A Portage man was charged Thursday with three charges in connection with a baseball bat attack on March 15.

John Schoon, 36, of 2195 Kennedy St., Portage, was charged with criminal recklessness, criminal confinement and battery.

He is accused of using a baseball bat to hit a male victim in the left arm and head. Police said Schoon then made the victim, who had been invited to the home by Schoon's daughter, stay in the living room for 20 minutes.

Schoon told police he doesn't like that his daughter has been hanging out with the victim because his daughter and the victim have talked about sex, and because the daughter's grades have suffered. Schoon told police he did have his daughter invite the victim to his home, but said he only talked to the victim and did not hit him.

Eight arrested at drinking party

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police responded to a report of an underage drinking party at 1 a.m. Monday at 1611 Elm St. and ended up arresting eight people.

The resident, Rhonda Fromm, 41, was arrested on a charge of furnishing alcohol to minors. Her son, Zachary Fromm, 18, was arrested on an underage drinking charge, as were Hollis Ballard and John Small, both 18, of Valparaiso, and four juveniles.

Men shocked with Taser in two incidents

VALPARAISO | Two men with the same last name were shocked with Tasers and arrested in separate incidents Saturday. A police spokesman didn't know if the men are related.

The first arrest was made at 1 p.m. on McCord Road. Police said Kelvin Breland Jr., 26, of Valparaiso, went to his wife's apartment despite a restraining order. Police said Breland punched an officer and was shocked with a Taser after resisting arrest. He was arrested on charges of invasion of privacy, resisting and battery to police.

The second arrest was made at 11:54 p.m. on Clover Lane. Police said Anthony Breland, 22, of Valparaiso, broke his girlfriend's car window and tried to stop her from calling police. Police said they shocked him with a Taser after he resisted attempts to place him in a squad car. He was arrested on charges of criminal mischief, interference with reporting a crime and resisting.

Cops: Man had Viagra without prescription

VALPARAISO | An 18-year-old Valparaiso man was arrested on a felony drug possession charge after police said he was caught with the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra without a prescription following a traffic stop at 1 a.m. Monday at Calumet Avenue and Bullseye Lake Road.

Dana Huck was arrested on the drug charge, and on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Two juveniles in his car were arrested on possession of marijuana charges. One also was arrested on an underage drinking charge.

Mailbox damaged by bottle bomb

JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A Jackson Township man told police someone damage his mailbox. He told police his mail was scattered around and his mailbox door was on the other side of the street. Police said it appears someone combined common household chemicals to make a bottle bomb.

The owner of the mailbox is County Road 200 East resident Paul Vaneekeren. The damage is $50.

Cops: Man caught stealing from vehicle

SOUTH HAVEN | Porter County police said they caught a juvenile inside someone else's vehicle and the boy admitted he was looking to steal money.

The 14-year-old South Haven boy was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Friday on charges of underage drinking, theft and criminal trespass. Police said he was in a car belonging to Cathy McCaughn, of Baltimore Road.

Homeless man found in vacant trailer

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A homeless man was found passed out Friday afternoon on the couch of a vacant trailer owned by Meadowview Mobile Home Community.

The man, Laurel Morris, 50, of Portage, told police he is homeless and needed a place to sleep. Police arrested him on public intoxication and criminal trespass charges. A maintenance man found him in the trailer on Harmony Court.
