Symphony presents holiday concert

The Northwest Indiana Symphony presents its Holiday Pop concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Star Plaza Theatre.

Pearl Harbor Day luncheon scheduled Dec. 7

The Hammond Rotary Club, Northwest Indiana Navy League and the Northwest Indiana Forum host their 41st annual Pearl Harbor Day luncheon at noon Dec. 7 at Dynasty Banquet Hall, 4141 Calumet Ave.

City hosts holiday parade 10 a.m. Saturday

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Holiday Parade Committee host the annual Christmas parade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The parade forms at Gavit High School, 1670 175th St., and heads east to Indianapolis Boulevard then north on Indianapolis to 169th Street.

Church collects coats through Sunday for needy

The First United Methodist Men's Group is collecting coats through Sunday at the church, 400 44th Place.

The public is invited to bring clean coats in good condition to the church office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Men's coats will go to Hammond Rescue Missions and the women's and children's coats will go to Sojourner Truth House in Gary, a women's shelter.

Pet license enrollment opens Monday

The annual domestic pet license enrollment period opens Monday and runs through March 3.

The fee is $5 per animal. Information identifying the pet and owner is recorded. The tags serve as identification should any pet stray from home. The Police Department and clerk-treasurer's office keep a list of the tags to notify an owner if their animal is found.

Engineer to speak on international projects

International construction projects will be the topic of the next meeting of the Northwest Indiana World Trade Council.

The trade council will meet at 8 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Avalon Manor on U.S. 30.

Featured will be speaker Julius Ballanco, an engineer who has traveled the world working on international construction projects involving plumbing.

The cost is $16 for members and $18 for the general public.

Church to host World AIDS Day event Saturday

Calvary Institutional Missionary Baptist Church will observe World AIDS Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 2400 Virginia St.

Faith and community partners will come together to provide HIV/AIDS information.

The event includes free HIV testing and counseling, refreshments, panel discussion, vendors distributing health-related information, and participation in a statewide red balloon launch to memorialize the lives of those impacted by the virus.

The Phi Alpha sorority will conduct a nonperishable food drive for people living with HIV.
