It will be weeks before authorities have more information about a fatal crash that killed a former Merrillville High School basketball standout.

Lavell Cook, 21, of Merrillville, died after a high-speed crash into a pole at 4:52 a.m. Sunday near State Street and Alice Avenue in Burnham.

There were four other passengers. Cook, who was the driver, was the only person who was killed.

Cook's funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater First Baptist Church, 4862 Olcott Ave., East Chicago.

Burnham Police Chief Peter Belos said Wednesday toxicology and other reports could take weeks. A reconstruction report will show how fast the vehicle was traveling, Belos said.

"We know it was at a very high rate of speed but we don't have that report and it could take a week or so," he said.

"There was one girl who was not transported to the hospital. Everybody was ejected except the one girl who was wearing a seat belt," Belos said.

Belos identified the passengers as 21-year-old twins Jacqueline and Dora White, of Dolton, Megan Hudson, 21, of South Holland, and Lloyd Walker, 20, of Terre Haute.
