HIGHLAND | Police said two downstate men shot late Friday night in downtown Highland have been uncooperative in the investigation, and authorities are trying to locate a Merrillville man who might be able to "fill in some blanks."
Highland police Cmdr. George Georgeff asked anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of 33-year-old Charles Oliver to call Highland police.
Police don't believe Oliver to be the trigger man, but he is thought to be acquainted with the four others involved in the shooting, which happened about 11:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of Highway Avenue, Georgeff said.
The Times isn't naming any of the people involved because none of them have been charged with a crime.
According to a Highland Police Department news release:
A 34-year-old Indianapolis man and a 28-year-old Bloomington man had agreed to meet a 50-year-old Highland woman and a 52-year-old Highland man at a downtown bar.
Police said the group left the bar and became involved in an argument in the parking lot. The two downstate men began attacking the Highland residents.
The 50-year-old woman pulled a gun and fired it into the air only to be disarmed. The 52-year-old man then grabbed the gun while being beaten and fired at the downstate men, both of whom were struck by the gunfire.
Georgeff said one man was shot in the wrist and taken to Community Hospital in Munster for treatment.
The second man suffered at least one gunshot wound to the elbow, and fled to a hospital in Michigan City, before being taken to a trauma center in South Bend, Georgeff said. Police traveled to South Bend on Saturday to interview the victim and were attempting to speak with him again, Georgeff said.
Neither victim has cooperated in the investigation, and both are recovering, Georgeff said.
Following the shooting, the two Highland residents came to the Police Department to report the incident and were taken into custody, Georgeff said. Police obtained statements from both individuals, he said.
