GLENWOOD | Fifty-two cars were cited during a seat belt checkpoint conducted by the Glenwood Police Department on Oct. 17.

Cars were checked in front of the Living Springs Community Church on Halsted Street between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.

In addition to the 52 seat belt citations, 13 moving citations were issued and police made one felony firearms arrest and one misdemeanor cannabis arrest.

Glenwood Police Chief Brian Smith said the firearm was discovered under a seat when a back seat passenger in one car made suspicious movements.

"It kind of caught our attention the way he was acting," Smith said.

The driver of the same car was found with cannabis.

Glenwood Trustee Tony Plott complimented Smith and the police department earlier this week for collaborating with the Chicago Heights Police Department to conduct the checkpoint.

Chicago Heights assisted by providing officers and a mobile command unit.

"I also understand we have an agreement with Markham, and it's nice to know that you guys are partnering with our neighboring communities to give each other a hand," Plott said.

Smith said that this was the first checkpoint done by the department in a long time but that he plans to do many more, perhaps every couple months or so. The $25 fine for not wearing a seat belt generates funds for the village.

"Maybe we can change the mindset of society and make everybody wear a seat belt," Smith said.
