The fifth Wednesday spaghetti dinner sponsored by Ehinger Brothers VFW 8141 and Ladies Auxiliary has been cancelled for October. The next dinner will take place Jan. 30.
Yard cards | Homewood
At Homewood-Flossmoor Park District's Holiday Yard Card Workshop, participants will create their own holiday card on a 4-foot by 5-foot board to be displayed in their yard. Supplies are included. Light package and stakes must be purchased separately.
Holiday Yard Card Workshop meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 31 to Nov. 30. Holiday Yard Card Workshop is held at 18727 Dixie Highway. Fee is $95 for a single-sided card or $145 for a double-sided card. Old cards can be re-painted on the backside for $60 or touched up in a two-hour session for $20.
Participants must register by Nov. 12 in order to complete the project by Nov. 30. Participants interested can sign up at the Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave.

Museum trip | Crete
The Crete Public Library invites young adults to attend a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to see the new Star Wars exhibit. The trip is tentatively planned for Nov. 17, depending on availability of tickets for the exhibit. Participants will leave from the library at 8:30 a.m. and take the Metra train to the museum, with a scheduled return to the library around 5:30 p.m. Cost of the trip is $26 for museum entrance and train fare. International Institute/LACASA hosts an open house for those interested in enrolling in GED or ESL classes. A surgical fire awareness event is set for 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at the St. John Township Community Center, 1515 W. Lincoln Highway. St. John Township resident David Hlebasko, a burn victim, and his family will host the event, which aims to spread the word about how surgical fires can be prevented. Attendees also can shop from vendors such as Lia Sophia, Mary Kay, Tastefully Simple and Gold Canyon Candles; a portion of proceeds will benefit Surgicalfire.org. SPAGHETTI DINNER | East Chicago
The American Legion, auxiliary and Sons of American Legion of Post 369 sponsor a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for President Shirley Ridenour, who is extremely ill. Proceeds will help defray medical expenses. The all-you-can-eat dinner is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 16. A silent auction, bake sale and other activities are planned. Tickets cost $10 and will be sold at the door and in advance by phone. Ridenour has been very active in our auxiliary and the First District for more than 20 years, holding various offices and chairmanships.
