Young artists show their work

HAMMOND | Art lovers don't have to travel to Chicago to find interesting artwork on display.

The seventh annual High School Art Show is on exhibit through the end of the month in the Bernard Gallery at Calumet College of St. Joseph, 2400 New York Ave.

One hundred students from Bishop Noll Institute and Crown Point, Hammond, Hanover, Hebron, Highland, Lake Central, Mount Carmel and Portage high schools participated in the event.

Amanda Cimaroli, of Hebron High School, won first place in best of show for her piece, "I'm Not Usually Narcissistic."

Other best of show winners were Brittney O'Keefe, of Bishop Noll, for "Breaking Through," which was second; Amanda Unnock, of Lake Central, for "Seen In Color," which took third; Kenton Pratt, also of Lake Central, for "Rhino," which was fourth; and Alejandro Zamora, of Hammond High, for "Fierce Eyes," which took fifth place.

Sculpture award winners were as follows:

First - Ben Boshoven, et. al., of Hebron High, for "Chillaxin:" second - Angela Mills, Portage High, for "Conan Angel-Baby;" and third - Matthew Fleming, of Bishop Noll, for "Lubia/Matt."

Photography winners were as follows:

First - "Strand of Life" by Brittney Smith, of Portage High; second - "Hugging Birds" by Kristen Whitehead, of Hanover Central; third - "Double Vision " by Kyle Qualizza, of Crown Point High.

Painting winners were as follows:

First - "Lady at the Window" by Erika Zamudio, of Bishop Noll; second - "Girl in Afghan" by Cassie Rivera, of Bishop Noll; third - "Calm Waters" by Jordan Doherty, of Portage High.

Winners in drawing were as follows:

First - "Rob" by Ryan Postell, of Highland High; second - "Grasp" by Danny Jasnic, of Hebron High; third - "Mandy Moore" by Matt Deprizio, of Mount Carmel.

Mixed media winners were as follows:

First - "The Flapper Era" by Alyssa Mayerik, of Portage High; second - "Honest Government" by Stephen Smolinski, of Portage High; third - "Van Gogh's Starry Night" by Amanda Leimbach, of Portage High.

Winners in the 3-D art contest were as follows:

First - "Marbels" by Nicole Krooswyk, of Portage High; second - "You Can Check Out Anything" by Matt Tomsic, of Lake Central; third - "Slab Vase with Vines" by Nicole Polus, of Lake Central.
