ANDERSON, Ind. | An officer serving a warrant fatally shot a man who ran from and briefly wrestled with police, authorities said.

Two uniformed officers went to a home in Anderson, 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis, about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. One of them chased the man and during a struggle, the man reached for his waist, as if "trying to retrieve something," the officer reported.

The man then broke free and ran back toward the home. The second officer intercepted him and they briefly struggled before the man broke free again.

One officer chased the suspect into a nearby garage, where the man drew a handgun and pointed it at the officer, who fired at least one shot, said Anderson Police Department spokesman Joel Sandefur. The man died at the scene from a head wound, Sandefur said.

"The officer acted in self-defense," Sandefur said.

Police declined to give the man's name, pending notification of relatives. The officers also were not named.

Northwestern Indiana authorities were investigating a separate shooting involving a Valparaiso officer. Investigators said Marilyn Stephens, 74, died after being hit in the chest Tuesday night by a ricocheted bullet fired by the officer.

That shooting happened during a standoff between Stephens' ex-husband, Timothy Stephens, 55, and police.
