HAMMOND | No injuries were reported on Friday in a lunchtime bank robbery downtown.

Witnesses told police a white man in his 50s entered the First Federal Savings and Loan office at 130 Rimbach St. about 12:20 p.m., implied to a teller he had a handgun and demanded money.

The man, described as about 6 foot 2 inches tall and roughly 215 pounds with a medium build, a jacket and a ball cap, fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.

No arrests have yet been made. A man observed by police running from the scene and apprehended was determined to not have been involved in the robbery, Police Chief Brian Miller said.

The First Federal building is one of the downtown's newest. The building was opened last year after the firm moved across Rimbach Street from its previous location, where it had been for 90 years.

Anyone with information about Friday's robbery or someone who may have been a witness is asked to call the Hammond Police Detective Bureau at (219) 852-2900.
