BABY CHICKS | Lowell

Baby chicks will visit for a special children's program from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. The chicks are part of the 4-H Classroom Embryology Program of the Lake County Purdue Extension Service. Lowell resident George Salatas, 13, is in his second year of the 4-H Poultry Program and will bring one dozen of newly hatched chicks to the library for children to see, hold and pet while learning the story of how the tiny newborn birds went from egg to chick.

COACH OR CHEER | Crown Point

Crown Point Jr. Bulldog Cheerleading has more openings than ever. Registration for returning girls will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. April 4 at Lake Street Elementary School, 475 Lake St. Registration fro new participants entering grades 2 to 6 will be on a first come, first served basis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5, also at Lake Street Elementary School. Numbers will be passed out beginning at 8 a.m. All girls who reside in and/or attend a Crown Point school are welcome. Proof of residency will be verified. Cost is $35 to join, plus the cost of a uniform. Additional coaches are needed; coaches must have a daughter involved to participate.

BAND AUDITIONS | Merrillville

David Coppie, the musical artist with the current single "To Hold You Tight," will hold auditions for bassists, drummers, keyboardists and backup vocalists from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 29 at Guitar Center, 2108 E. U.S. 30. He is seeking new band members for his 2009 U.S. tour. The paid U.S. tour contract includes various national radio and television spots. Artists should be prepared to perform at least two selections during the interview. Auditions will be scheduled on site.

GENEALOGY SEARCH | Cedar Lake

Search on the Internet for genealogical information at 2 and 6:30 p.m. April 2 and at 6:30 p.m. April 14 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 E. 133rd Ave. Participants will discover the amount of information available on the Internet for tracing their ancestors and will learn how to use the library's Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest, and Pro-Quest Obituaries databases. Every participant will have a computer available and time to do some online research. Register.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST | Hobart

Hobart Lions Club is sponsoring a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. March 29 at the Hobart Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Road. Donation is $5, but children 5 and younger eat free. Proceeds will support Lion projects, such as Leader Dog, youth activities, medical research, and the operation of the Hospital Equipment Program. BRUNCH EVENT | Merrillville

State Representative Shelli VanDenburgh, R-Crown Point, is hosting a brunch fundraiser from 9:30 to 11 a.m. March 29 at The Patio Restaurant, 7706 Broadway, with Indiana Speaker of the House Pat Bauer as a special guest. Tickets are $50 at the door.

ELKS DINNER | Hobart

Hobart Elks Lodge 1152 will host a dinner and show April 5 in the Jubilee Room at the lodge, 3580 W 61st Ave. Back by popular demand, recording star and comedian Carol Nelson comes to Hobart directly from Sarasota, Fla. Her madcap skits, songs and comedy earned her the name "Crazy Carol." The family style dinner features tossed salad, parsley potatoes, chicken Marsala, fried white fish, mixed vegetables and dessert. Cost is $20 per person. Cocktails will be served 5 to 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. RSVP by April 1.

CHOIR & JAZZ | Gary

The concert choir and jazz band from of Xavier University, a historically Black Catholic college in New Orleans, will perform at 7 p.m. today at SS. Monica & Luke Catholic Church, 675 Rhode Island St. The free concert is sponsored by SS. Monica & Luke, Christ United Methodist and Marquette Park United Methodist churches. This is the first concert tour of the Midwest for the musicians since Hurricane Katrina.

IMMIGRATION TALK | Hammond

Immigration will be the focus of Purdue University Calumet's next Platinum Speakers program, at 6 p.m. April 1 at the Calumet Conference Center, on 173rd Street east of Indianapolis Boulevard. John Clark, senior fellow with the Sangamore Institute for Policy Research in Indianapolis, will discuss the economic effects of immigration. Clark has written extensively on the topic. The Sangamore Institute performs research and analysis and develops innovative and collaborative approaches to issues of public significance. Additionally, Jennifer Nagda, staff lawyer for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund of Chicago, will discuss immigration-related proposed legislation. Refreshments will be served at the event, hosted by the Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet. Although admission is free, advance registration is requested.

SILENT AUCTION | DeMotte

Friends of the DeMotte Library are sponsoring a silent auction featuring a variety of books, old and new, children and adult, through March at the library, 901 Birch St. SW. A booklet listing all items is available on the display case containing the offerings, and bids can be made, checked and rebid until March 31. Winning bidders will be notified.

First Tuesday Cross-Stitchers meets at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at the Lake County Public Library's Dyer-Schererville branch, 1001 W. Lincoln Highway. Crown Point Parks Department will cosponsor a free Scrabble Club for senior citizens, organized by two Crown Point High School Seniors working on a project to impact their community in a positive way. The club will meet from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday, April 2 through May 17, at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. An all-day tournament will be held May 17. Call to reserve a spot.

YWCA Y Singles Club sponsors a shopping and casino trip May 3 to 4 to Mall of America and Mystic Lake Casino in Bloomington, Minn. POLKA CELEBRATION | E.C.

The American Polka Association presents a polka celebration March 29 at American Legion Post 369, 1401 W. Chicago Ave. Musical entertainment for everyone's dancing and listening pleasure will be provided by Stas Bulanda's "Old School Review." Admission is $10 per person; children 16 and younger with a paid adult will be admitted free. Doors open at 6 p.m. with music from 7 to 11 p.m. Food and refreshments will be sold. Visit businesses that will be tuned into art sanctuaries and meet the artists. Crown Point Community Theatre will perform "Shakespeare Abridged" all evening at South Shore Arts, 138 S. Main St.
