INDIANAPOLIS | The National Weather Service has determined that at least one tornado touched down in central Indiana during Wednesday evening's storms.

The tornado first touched the ground near Lizton in northern Hendricks County, just west of Indianapolis, and moved east for several miles through mainly rural areas, National Weather Service Science Officer John Kwiatkowski said Thursday.

The tornado was rated as EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, he said.

"It could have been weaker, but it was what we would categorize as a weak tornado overall," he said.

The emergency management office in Hamilton County said a tornado also touched down in the northeastern part of the county at 7:25 p.m.

In Madison County, a funnel cloud was spotted near Summitville. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported in Anderson, where trees were blown down and a church damaged. Winds were clocked at 80 mph near Elwood.

The same system that brought thunderstorms to the Indianapolis area dropped nearly 4 inches of snow on South Bend, setting a snowfall record for April 11.
