Polls in today's municipal elections throughout Northwest Indiana closed at 6 p.m., and many precincts reported a light turnout -- even in Crown Point, where voters are deciding a hotly contested mayoral race.
A late morning fire at Hammond's Morton High School closed two precinct polling places there for a couple hours, until 2 p.m., and some Merrillville residents complained to their councilman upon learning their polling locations were closed.
Councilman Richard Hardaway, D-2nd, said only two polling places in the city were open because there was only one contested race. Hardaway apologized for the confusion.
