CROWN POINT | Fifteen-year-old Keon Moten was charged this week as an adult in the 2007 shooting death of a Merrillville teen.

Moten, of Gary, faces a murder charge in Lake Criminal Court. He is accused of gunning down 16-year-old Anthony White outside of a gas station at the intersection of 49th Avenue and Broadway in Gary. Gary police said Moten also shot and injured three other people.

The shooting occurred after a fist fight between rival groups at a Westside High School basketball game earlier that evening, court records state.

Gary police said the fight was staged so Moten could use the gun in retaliation for harassment and intimidation that he had experienced at the high school.

White was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the head at 2:49 a.m. Nov. 18 at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, the Lake County coroner's office reported.

Last month, Lake County Juvenile Court Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura approved Magistrate Glenn D. Commons' recommendation to waive jurisdiction over Moten on charges of robbery and criminal recklessness stemming from incidents before White's death. Moten was shipped across the street from juvenile detention to the Lake County Jail.

He is being held without bail.
