Prosecutors seek waiver to adult court in beating of girl, 16
CROWN POINT | The events that led to the severe beating of a 16-year-old Hobart girl were captured on a surveillance videotape, officials said during a Lake County Juvenile Court pretrial hearing for Brittney McCammon.
But so far, neither McCammon's attorney nor prosecutors have viewed it.
That's why Lake County Juvenile Court Magistrate Glenn Commons on Tuesday told Robert Schwerd, McCammon's attorney, that he should work with Deputy Prosecutor Georgia Zingo Enzer to view the security videotape taken outside Lake George Shrimp.
Enzer said she may or may not admit the videotape as evidence, depending on what it shows.
Commons set an Aug. 19 waiver hearing for McCammon, who has been charged with attempted murder and felony battery.
Prosecutors also are asking that the teen be waived to adult court, Lake County prosecutor's office spokeswoman Diane Poulton said.
McCammon is accused of beating Jamie Rodriguez on June 4 outside Lake George Shrimp, a downtown restaurant.
Rodriguez's injuries were so severe she had to be airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. She was released from the hospital a few days later, but continues to face ongoing physical therapy and psychiatric sessions, according to her parents.
The Rodriguez family has filed a civil lawsuit naming as defendants McCammon, McCammon's parents, the owner of Lake George Shrimp, David Robinson, Albert Hall and a Hobart minor and her parents.
The lawsuit seeks at least $20,000.
McCammon's parents, Wendy Bullock and Michael McCammon, were at Tuesday's hearing.
They sat quietly behind the table where their daughter sat, her hands and legs shackled during the few minutes she was in court.
The judge ordered McCammon returned to the county juvenile detention center.
