Jury trial for Daniel Swift vacated for the fourth time, records show
CROWN POINT | With a potential plea agreement in the works, Judge Pro Tem Reginald Marcus vacated Friday the jury trial of a Crown Point man accused of securities fraud.
Daniel Swift, 61, faces 58 criminal charges, including 18 counts of selling securities without a license, 17 counts of committing fraud in the offer or sale of a security, one count of corrupt business influence and four counts of forgery.
The charges allege Swift defrauded at least 13 Indiana and Illinois clients of more than $900,000 by selling them unregistered securities.
For nearly three and a half years, the case has languished in Lake Criminal Court, court records show. Swift's jury trial was vacated four times since 2006.
The Indiana Secretary of State's Securities Division began investigating Swift in 2003, following a complaint filed by one of his alleged victims.
The state and defense attorney Nick Thiros told Marcus that they had a tentative plea agreement that needed to be put in writing, court records show.
The submission of plea hearing is scheduled for May 22.
