CROWN POINT | Tax protesters erupted in cheers Friday afternoon when the proposed 1 percent county income tax died when the County Council refused even to take the vote needed to override a veto of the tax passed last week by the Lake County Council.
Council Attorney Ray Szarmach told the council meeting new legislation in 2008 may result in forcing the council to revist an income tax at a later time.
The non-vote will trigger a state law reducing Lake County property taxes in 2009 by more than $17 million.
