Editor's note: The following is a statement provided to The Times on Monday from an attorney for Leroy Coleman, the former principal at Sandridge Elementary School.
The statement is the first public comment from Coleman since DVDs appeared last week showing Coleman and teacher Janet Lofton having sex in Coleman's office.
Substitute teacher and teacher's aide Anjayla Reed also appears in the recording being hugged and touched by Coleman.
All three educators have since resigned.
"First I want to apologize to my wife of 30 years. My actions were not those of a loyal husband. She has endured with me all the humiliation and pain. I take complete responsibility for my inappropriate acts with a consenting adult.
"Words cannot express how the last few days have affected me and my family. Without denigrating my wrongdoing and my acceptance of responsibility, the persons who invaded my privacy need to be held accountable. It is not for me to comment on the motivation of the persons who knew or should have known of the placement of the video camera on District 172 property. While my actions have hurt my wife, their actions have hurt my family, friends and a lifetime of educating children.
"What I would like to make clear in all of this, is that in no way did my indiscretion impact the children of District 172. If you review the ISAT scores for the last two years (the period I spent in administration), you will see that the students at Sandridge Elementary have improved at every grade level.
"The invasive video that occurred on District 172 property was done without my knowledge and does not say who I am. It does say that I am human and have weaknesses. It does not show that I am a compassionate, hardworking person who was a successful administrator. I ask you not to judge me by one action, but, by the sum of my career.
"I will continue to cooperate with the Sheriff's Police of Cook County in their investigation. This will hopefully bring the persons responsible to justice.
"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to present this statement to you."
