CROWN POINT | The City Council heard the majority of a presentation that provided a possible remedy for the congested Broadway corridor before a storm Monday night cut power to City Hall, ending the meeting early.

Kimberlee Parker, the Indiana Department of Transportation project manager, said the state will focus on adding and extending turn lanes at five intersections along Broadway between 93rd Avenue and U.S. 231. She said the pavement also will be rehabilitated with new shoulders, curbing and resurfacing.

The project will occur in two phases with phase one being completed by 2010, said Doug Valmore, of Indianapolis-based engineering firm Clark Dietz. The first phase will include intersections at 109th Avenue and Summit Street, and the second phase will continue with the remaining three intersections at 113th Avenue, 101st Avenue and 93rd Avenue.

Concerned about the flow of traffic and safety on Broadway, state Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh, D-Crown Point, and Mayor David Uran began talks last year about how to improve the traffic on the road before its 2012 scheduled expansion by INDOT.

VanDenburgh, Uran and other city officials met with INDOT representatives in May and again in July where the group decided to focus on five intersections along Broadway that could be redesigned to help solve the congestion problem.

After the power outage interrupted the meeting, Uran asked the City Council to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the council chambers at City Hall, 101 N. East St., to finish the meeting's agenda.
