Firefighters worked to contain a Tuesday afternoon fire in a wooded section in Gary's Marshalltown neighborhood.

Gary Fire Department Division Chief Joe Eakins said the department received the call before 4:30 p.m. and found that tires and other debris were burning in the area near 22nd Place and Mississippi Street. Eakins said he wasn't aware of any injuries being reported as a result of the fire.

In the afternoon, black smoke billowed from the wooded area and it could be seen from Interstate 80/94. The cause of the fire could not immediately be determined, Eakins said.

Firefighters on the scene made it a priority to keep the fire contained to prevent a larger fire that could spread in the tree-laden area. Because the fire was in a difficult-to-reach area, Gary used assistance from Merrillville and New Chicago fire departments, Eakins said. The fire still burned near 6 p.m., but firefighters believed the situation was under control.
