Golf outing | Lansing
LARC, a nonprofit organization that provides services to people with developmental disabilities, will hold a golf outing Aug. 6 at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration. It includes a buffet lunch, putting contest, 18 holes of golf and complimentary beverages available through the round. After every golfer is off the course, a cocktail hour takes place with another buffet. Tickets for this full day of events are $150.

Golf outing | Bloomingdale
Residents and businesses in Aunt Martha's service area are invited to participate in the sixth annual golf benefit scheduled for Aug. 17 at Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. with a box lunch and a scramble format; tee time is at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee for golf is $125 per person or $500 per foursome and includes lunch, cart, Texas barbecue buffet and awards. Funds raised support local services for children, youth and families.

Night Out | Lansing
The Lansing Police Department will take part in the 24th annual National Night Out Against Crime from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 7. Residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening with neighbors and the police department. They can also join forces with police by attending Give Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party at the Knights of Columbus Grounds. The party will feature a cookout with free food and beverages, raffles, giveaways, K-9 demonstration, anti-crime talks and a flashlight/anti-crime march around the grounds.

Night Out | Calumet City
Neighborhoods throughout Calumet City are invited to join the 24th annual National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event. All residents can take part in the March on Crime, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Commissioners Park, at Memorial Drive just east of Exchange Avenue. The walk will be made through several blocks. Attendees are encouraged to make signs that promote the event and spread the message that the neighborhoods will not tolerate crime and drugs. Live entertainment will be provided by the Motown music group, R GANG.

Off campus GED | Chicago Heights
This fall Prairie State College is offering General Education Development preparation classes for the high school equivalency exam at several community locations. The GED is a nationally accepted equivalent of a high school diploma. The classes will be held in Chicago Heights and Ford Heights starting Aug. 21.
The first step in obtaining a GED is to register for the mandatory placement test. Placement tests will be held at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at God Can Ministries Education & Family Life Institute, 1100 Greenwood, Ford Heights, and Aug. 13 at the Chicago Heights Public Library, 25 W. 15th St., Chicago Heights. No appointment is necessary.
Community members also can take the placement test at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at Aunt Martha's Youth Service Center, 233 W. Joe Orr Road, Chicago Heights. For this location, a reservation is required by calling Aunt Martha's at (708) 679-8136.

MEN'S CHOIR | Hammond
Pacific Garden Mission's men's choir sings with the Rev. Kermit Hagerman of the mission for the 10:45 a.m. service Aug. 5 at Christian Fellowship Church, 605 165th St. The mission has been in downtown Chicago since 1877. It exists to meet the spiritual and physical needs of anyone coming through its doors. It produces a radio program, "Unshackled." The choir is made up of 15 to 20 men who have had their lives changed by the ministry.

GOLF OUTING | Plainfield, Ill.
Hispanic Bankers Foundation hosts its 13th annual golf outing fundraiser Aug. 9 at Links of Carillon. Registration is at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Cocktails will be served at 4 p.m. with a barbecue dinner served at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $200 for individuals for dinner and golf and $100 for cocktails and dinner only. Golf packages are available for $1,200, and hole sponsorship is $500. A benefit evening of music & song, "The Complete Works of Stephanie Naumoff - Abridged!" will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at Memorial Opera House, 104 E. Indiana Ave. The show will be immediately followed by cocktails, a light buffet catered by Strongbow Inn and dancing on stage. Tickets are $40 for general admission or $100 VIP seating with the guest of honor and beverages & hor's d'oeuvres served throughout the evening. This benefit was prompted by Stephanie Naumoff's recent diagnosis of a chronic costly medical condition and the fact that she has no health insurance. Naumoff has been a strong supporter of the theatre community in Northwest Indiana, prompting her friends to take to the stage on her behalf.

Northwest Indiana Families for Effective Autism Treatment will host a Night Out for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Deep River Waterpark, 9001 E. This event is for all ages who are physically or mentally challenged or have learning disabilities, along with family members and/or caregivers. A benefit lunch and silent auction will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 5 at Prairie Point Clubhouse, 9123 Cleveland St., for Lowell resident Patricia Strickhorn, a longtime employee at Bachrach's clothing store in Merrillville. A $20 minimum donation is asked per adult for food, beverages and desserts. The silent auction will include White Sox and Cubs baseball tickets, an iPod and speakers, a hat autographed by Indianapolis Colt coach Toy Dungy and more. There will also be entertainment, swimming, sand volleyball, a beanbag toss and more. Proceeds will help with medical bills resulting from Strickhorn's cancer treatment.
