BURN CAMP FUNDRAISER | Valparaiso
Tudor Services' 4th Annual Golf Outing to support Hoosier Burn Camp is set for Aug. 11 at The Golf Course at Aberdeen, 245 N. Tower Road. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 10 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and dinner, hole contests, beverage carts, opportunity for skins, awards and door prizes. Hoosier Burn Camp serves Indiana's young people 8 to 18 years old who have suffered the pain and trauma of being caught in a fire. For many of these children, Hoosier Burn Camp is the only opportunity to connect with other burn survivors, play in the outdoors without another child looking or asking about their skin. Organizers also are looking for sponsors for the golf outing.

GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY | Valparaiso
Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society meets from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 16 at the Porter County Public Library's Valparaiso branch, 103 Jefferson St. The topic is Defining the Borders - Why Lines are Where They Are by Gerard Dupczak. He will explain why the borders of states and countries are where they are now. Meetings are free and open to the public.

WEATHER SAFETY | Valparaiso
Porter County Aging & Community Services will host a presentation on weather safety by Phil Griffith, the Porter County Emergency Management Director, at 10 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Friendship Center, 1005 Campbell St. This program will discuss information about thunderstorms, lightening, tornadoes and how to stay safe during inclement weather. Two All Hazards Alert Radios and more will be given away. There is no charge for this presentation and it is open to the public. RSVP.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT | Portage
The Caregiver Support Group provides information in a supportive environment where caregivers can share problems, ideas and successful solutions. All those who provide care are welcome. The Caregiver Support Group is designed for any disease, with an emphasis on the elderly. The facilitator is Sharon Orenick, a licensed clinical social worker with Harbor Light Hospice. The Caregiver Support Group is held at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the Assisted Living Apartments of Miller's Senior Living Community, 5911 Lute Road. The group is free and open to the public. RSVP's are requested but not required. Refreshments will be served.

CUTEST BABY | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Popcorn Festival again is holding its cutest baby contest. All babies must be between 9 and 24 months old an live in Porter County. No advance registration is required. Preliminaries will be held between 8 a.m. and noon Aug. 16 at the Valparaiso Community Festivals & Events office, 162 W. Lincolnway. Registration fee is $10. Babies will be judged on the following categories: dress (20 percent), facial appearance (40 percent) and personality (40).

SHELTER HOURS | Valparaiso
The Porter County Animal Shelter, 2056 Heavilin Road, has expanded its hours and now will be open until 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Shelter hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays; and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The shelter is closed on Sundays.

Mental Health America of Porter County offers support to adults experiencing grief due to loss of a loved one. The group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday at Mental Health America of Porter County, 402 E. Indiana Ave. The meeting is free, but donations are accepted. The group's topics guide members through grief work while peer camaraderie normalizes the grief experience.

Open Door Social Club is seeking donations of nonperishable food items, cleaning products, household and personal items, or money. The club, housed in the Margaret Stevens House, 402 E. Indiana Ave., is a program of Mental Health America of Porter County. Pantry items will be distributed to adults with mental illness who are living in the community. Volunteers also are needed for the Open Door Social Club. The group is looking for outgoing, encouraging and caring adults or groups to volunteer a few hours each month. The club offers activities and outings for adults with mental illness. The club meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Margaret Stevens House.

The poker run will start with registration between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Michigan City Harley, 2968 N. U.S. 421. The five stops on the poker run include Joe's Bar, 2958 W. U.S. 12, Michigan City; Leroy's Hot Stuff, 333 W. U.S. 20, Porter; Ruthie's Central Lounge, 3425 Central Ave., Lake Station; WoJo's Saloon, 391-1 W. U.S. 6, South Haven; and The Coachlite, 361 Calumet Ave., Chesterton. The last bike will return by 4 p.m. The event also includes a live band, beer garden, food and raffles. All vehicles are welcome.

JOBS FOR SENIORS | Indiana
Low-income Hoosiers 55 and older who want to work but can't find a job can get assistance from Experience Works. Paid training assignments and job-placement services are available for those unemployed, retired and wanting to return to work, or who have never had a job. Experience Works will pay a worker's wages while they learn new job skills at a community service organization, then help the worker prepare a resume and go for interviews. Experience Works has helped thousands of Hoosier seniors get jobs.
