HOMEWOOD | Churchill School students have raised nearly $800 to aid with flood relief in Northwest Indiana.

The students were motivated to contribute to the disaster relief effort when they learned that the home of gifted education teacher and Munster resident Joanne Obszanski had been damaged by the flood. The students' donation will be made to the Munster Civic Foundation in Obszanski's name.

About $150 of the total was raised via an in-school lemonade stand operated during snack times by Elizabeth Klauppauf's and Nancy Woods' third-grade classrooms.

"We were studying economics in class and reading a story about a girl who started a lemonade stand. Our lemonade stand gave us a chance to learn real-life lessons about supply and demand and about being an entrepreneur while helping a good cause," said Klauppauf.

The remainder of the donation was raised through a school-wide spare change collection spearheaded by the student council.
