LANSING | The Lansing Motel apparently no longer wants to be a part of Lansing.

The Village Board on Tuesday is prepared to approve a resolution that would formally disconnect land that now is in the village and is a part of the property of the motel at 1650 Thornton Road.

Actually, the motel itself is not located in its namesake town. It is located on unincorporated and that borders the western edge of Lansing.

But there is an unimproved portion of Blackstone Avenue that is part of the motel's property, which was incorporated into Lansing many decades ago when the suburb annexed the site directly to the east of the motel.

Lansing has no use for the street, which is a dead-end, and Lansing Motel officials do not see a need to seek annexation into the suburb, preferring their status as being in unincorporated Cook County.

So under the resolution, the dead-end street will be formally "disconnected" from the suburb.

The motel is not connected to Lansing's sewer system, and it gets its water from a well. "They're not getting anything from us," Mayor Dan Podgorski said, even though village Trustee Bob Ryan questioned whether any effort had been made to convince the motel's owners to annex to the village instead of letting the road go.

Negotiations between the motel's owners and Lansing officials have taken place in executive sessions throughout the summer months, with Village Attorney Dale Andersen providing a public summary of the negotiations at the Aug. 19 Village Board meeting.

Last week, Podgorski said negotiations were complete, and there was no reason to delay the disconnection of the stub of Blackstone Avenue any longer.

Officials are scheduled to vote on the measure when they meet Tuesday.

Under the disconnection agreement, the motel's owners will pay Lansing about $2 per square foot for the road, bringing the total bill to $26,200, which Andersen said would be deposited in the village's general fund to maintain other government operations.
