Police investigate how child drowned in pool

Authorities are investigating the Friday death of a 2-year-old child.

The child apparently drowned in a pool about 8:25 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of East Harrison Street, according to a news release.

The 2-year-old was pronounced dead at the Jasper County Hospital. The child walked away from a home about a block away from the pool with a 3-year-old cousin, the news release states.

The children were being supervised by their 71-year-old grandfather and 43-year-old uncle, according to the news release. Authorities aren't certain how the child was able to get into the pool.

The Newton County Sheriff's Department and the Newton County Division of Child Services are investigating the case.

City Fire Rescue to offer children's car seat clinic

Crown Point Fire Rescue will hold a child car seat inspection and installation clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 12 at Jewel-Osco, 1276 N. Main St., Crown Point.

Reservations are not required, and participants will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis. The department asks that residents bring the child who will ride in the seat. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for the car seat program.

Stunt bikers to perform, sign autographs at show

Two stunt riders from the Midwest Bike Trials Demo Team will perform at Thursday's Car Cruise from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in Parry Court in Crown Point.

The two riders have performed at The Chicago Bike Show, Bourbonnais Friendship Festival and the National Football Hall of Fame Parade.

The riders will be available to sign autographs throughout the show.

String Fever scheduled to play at central library

The musical group String Fever will perform at 7 p.m. July 9 at the Lake County Public Library's central location, 1919 W. 81st Ave.

The group will perform in the library's meeting rooms.

Premier Laundry owner reports armed robbery

The owner of Premier Laundry, 3021 W. 37th Ave., reported an armed robbery over the weekend, police Lt. Steve Houck said.

The owner said three men and a woman came into the store and one of the men displayed weapon.

The owners told police he was robbed of $30 to $40.

The four people left the scene in a four-door, silver-colored Pontiac Grand Am with Indiana plates.
