Men charged with TV thefts

Cops say pair stole from store; one escaped jail

CROWN POINT | After taking two men into custody for allegedly stealing televisions Sunday from the Target in Hobart, one of the men escaped from the Hobart City Jail, court records show.

Besides facing two theft charges, John Vannatter Jr., 30, of Hammond, also faces an escape charge.

David Starkey, 42, of Munster, was charged with two counts of theft.

A security officer at Target reviewed surveillance tapes from Sept. 13 and saw two men taking LCD TVs from a display, court records show.

On Sunday, the officer saw the same two men in the store walk past the cashiers with two more LCD TVs, reports state. He called in a description of the men and the car they left in and a Hobart officer stopped them at Colorado Street and U.S. 30, records state. The officer found the TVs in the trunk and arrested Starkey and Vannatter, records show.

On Monday, another inmate told an officer who was taking him and other prisoners to court that an inmate escaped from the jail, records state.

Surveillance footage of the jail showed that while an officer moved Vannatter's cellmate, Vannatter held the door open and walked out, records show.
