No indication alcohol a factor, police say
CROWN POINT | State police don't know what caused a rollover crash that killed a 43-year-old Valparaiso man early Sunday morning on Interstate 65 in Crown Point.
Moises Avina-Lopez, of the 100 block of Brockton Place in Valparaiso, died about 2 a.m. Sunday after a guardrail-crushing wreck at the 113th Avenue overpass, according to Indiana State Police.
Avina-Lopez was driving a 2002 Cadillac Escalade truck south on I-65 when the truck swerved off the road and hit the guardrail head on, state police said. The Cadillac tipped onto its side, state police said.
Avina-Lopez died at the scene from blunt force trauma, said a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office.
The driver did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt, state police said. The truck was destroyed.
Police found no indication alcohol was involved in the crash, state police Sgt. Alan Jamerson said.
