Two semitrailers collided and one from a Harvey company spilled a load of dust Wednesday morning, snarling traffic on the Borman Expressway for miles and hours while workers cleaned up the mess.
The accident happened near the Kennedy exit in Hammond at about 5:37 a.m., and backed up traffic east of Interstate 65, about 10 miles, Indiana State Police Trooper Carl Werner said. Traffic wasn't moving freely until about 1:30 p.m., Werner said.
Indiana State Trooper Joseph Myers said one semi was coming down the Kennedy exit eastbound, hit some ice, lost control and ran into a semi traveling the same direction already on the freeway.
"That semi lost control after being struck and he hit the barrier wall, his load went over the barrier and caused other accidents in westbound lanes," he said.
In all, seven vehicles were involved in the accident, Myers said.
On man's leg was injured and he was taken to Munster Community Hospital.
After the accident, nonhazardous dust covered about 16 yards of the freeway, K-Plus Plant & Environmental Services Inc. President James McGlothen said. His company handled the cleanup.
