CEDAR LAKE | The Hanover School Board unanimously accepted the resignation of Superintendent Michael Livovich on Monday, following a 30-minute, closed-door session.

The resignation is effective immediately.

About 30 residents, teachers and parents gathered for what was a five-minute meeting that left some of them frustrated.

"I'm interested in who's going to take his place. There are so many things up in the air now," Christi Long said. "I'm not saying it won't be a good move."

Others wanted to know the financial terms of the joint agreement dissolving Livovich's two-year contract.

Board attorney Monica Conrad declined to provide details of the agreement, but said they will be available today.

During Livovich's six-year tenure as superintendent, test scores improved in the corporation, the board said.

Board President Kay Sheehy said in a news release, "Dr. Livovich's passion for children is unsurpassed. His energy will be truly missed."

Livovich did not attend Monday's meeting.

Reached later at this home, Livovich said he has no immediate plans, but he and his wife are looking at options. Teaching at the university level is a consideration, he said.

"I hope I've made a difference," he said. "I wish Hanover all the best."

Board members made no comments Monday, instead referring to the news release.

The majority of board members have been supportive of Livovich; however, he has had vocal detractors, especially recently as the district faces financial instability.

Resident Eileen Hunley said the timing of the decision was unexpected.

"It's strange to do it now with a new board taking office soon. Personally, I would have waited and let the next School Board deal with it," she said.

On July 1, Pat Kocot, a former School Board member and Livovich opponent, Mary Joan Dickson and Dale Poston will assume their seats on the five-member board.

Sheehy and board member Marilyn Kaper chose not to run again. Incumbent Renae Helton was defeated at the polls by Kocot.
