Used book sale | Calumet City
The Calumet City Public Library, 660 Manistee Ave., is having its annual used book sale through Aug. 4. There will be thousands of books for sale. Most paperbacks will cost 25 cents and most hardcover books will cost 50 cents. There will also be magazines, videos, cassettes and CDs. The schedule for the sale is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, 4 to 8 p.m. July 31, 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 4, during which time a bag of books is $2.

Library closed | South Holland
The South Holland Public Library will be closed all day for staff development on Aug. 10. The book drop in the rear of the building will be open. The library is at 16250 Wausau Ave.

The Buzz about Bees | Glenwood
Glenwood-Lynwood Public Library, 320 Glenwood-Lansing Road, will have a program about bees at 7 p.m. Aug. 9. The honey bee is a critical component to the environment and the economy, and they are dying off at an alarming rate. Beekeeper Michael Hansen of Blueberry Farms will discuss this insect and how to prevent its further demise.

Indoor picnic | Homewood
The Illiana Jewish Genealogical Society will have its annual indoor picnic luncheon from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 5 at Marie Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Everyone is invited to attend and the fee is $8 per person. One meal is free with a new family membership joining for the first time. Cold cuts and salads will be provided and those attending are asked to bring a side dish or dessert and a prospective member. Family memberships are $20.

Diabetes classes | Hazel Crest
To help individuals understand and manage their diabetes, Advocate South Suburban Hospital offers free day and evening diabetes classes. Daytime classes are from 1 to 3 p.m., and evening classes are held from 7 to 9 p.m. There will only be daytime classes available in August. The next daytime classes will be held on Aug. 7 and 21. The hospital is at 17800 S. Kedzie Ave. All classes are held in the 3 East Classroom.

Bus tour | Lansing
The Lansing Historical Society will have its annual bus tour Sept. 8 and will visit the University of Chicago with Seecago Tours. Leave at 8 a.m. from the rear parking lot of the Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave. Return home about 5 p.m. Tour the campus and eat at the Quadrangle Restaurant. The tour will also include other historical sites in Chicago and costs $84.

Golf classic | Chicago
St. Xavier University's 11th annual golf classic is at 9 a.m. Aug. 7 at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. The outing raises money for student scholarships.
Dan Hampton, a former Chicago Bear, will participate and golf with some of the guests at the outing.
Registration for individual golfers is $300. Raffle tickets can be purchased at a cost of one for $25 or five for $100. A variety of raffle prizes will be awarded, and this year a live auction of items will be offered to support the SXU Scholarship Fund. Winners need not be present at time of the raffle drawing.

Cheeseburger in Paradise | Lansing
Tickets are now available for the annual Cheeseburger In Paradise Party, to be held from 6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 18 on the grounds of the Lansing Knights of Columbus, 178th and Lorenz Avenue. Have all the cheeseburgers and chips you can eat from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at the K of C Lounge or Office. Hutch will perform a Jimmy Buffett tribute from 6 to 8 p.m. and The Relics will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight.

SENIOR ARTISTS | Hammond
The Hammond Public Library invites artists 55 and older to enter its 17th annual Senior Art Exhibit. Artists may enter up to two original works. The juried show will be exhibited Sept. 4 to Oct. 26 at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St. Work should be delivered in person to the library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 to 10.
