Indiana lost 3,300 jobs in September as manufacturers and other employers continued to shed positions in the face of a national economic slowdown.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics issued a report Tuesday showing Indiana was one of 41 states in which employers reported cuts in payroll.

Indiana's September seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate ticked down to 6.2 percent from 6.4 percent in August, the bureau reported. It stood at 4.5 percent just one year ago.

The state can lose jobs while unemployment dips because the unemployment rate is gathered in a separate survey and takes into account other factors, such as the number of people looking for jobs.

Illinois lost 3,700 jobs in September, and its seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 6.9 percent from 7.3 percent the month before.

Indiana has lost 12,500 net jobs since last September, with the largest loss coming in the battered manufacturing sector, in which 20,600 jobs were lost.

In September, 526,400 people were at work in manufacturing, a decrease of 4,200 from the month before.

The largest job gainer in Indiana has been government employment, which added 10,200 jobs in the past year.
