School officials OK change orders for commons area
ST. JOHN | Lake Central school officials approved the final change orders on the high school's Town Square project and credited the construction management firm for its part in helping the work come in $1 million under budget.
"They did a wonderful job watching over the contractors," said Tom Dykiel, director of finance.
Envoy Inc., of Indianapolis, provided the project and construction management for the summer construction, which was the first phase in the district's master plan.
The Town Square area is a central common space, near the current main entrance, cafeteria and gym, and was designed by OWP/P Architects, of Chicago, to be the heart of the school.
The change orders came in about 5 percent more than the base bid, but the initial contract saved $500,000 because it was that much lower than other bids.
"I love your watchdog attitude," School Board President Margaret Clark said.
Board member Nancy Gray was equally impressed.
"This is the best money the corporation has ever spent," she said.
