Chesterton man faces multiple charges after standoff
CHESTERTON | A Chesterton man was arrested on multiple charges after he was accused of battering his wife and then engaging police in a two-hour standoff at his home.
Arthur Cerros, 35, of 227 S. Eighth St., was arrested on charges of battery, strangulation, interference with reporting a crime and invasion of privacy.
Police said a neighbor reported the disturbance at 11:11 p.m. Monday. Officers said they arrived and saw what appeared to be Cerros keeping his wife captive. He would not answer the door, police said.
SWAT team members were called and used a bullhorn to get Cerros to exit the home about 1:08 a.m. Tuesday -- about two hours after the initial call.
Cerros' wife told police she and Cerros got into an argument and he hit her. She told police he broke two telephones while she was trying to call police. She told police he then choked her until she became very dizzy and thought she might die.
She told police that Cerros' mother, who was at the house, laughed at her while she was being battered. She also accused Cerros' mother of battery, but the mother wasn't arrested.
Cerros' wife also accused him of making her be quiet and go upstairs once police arrived. A neighbor reported hearing Cerros issue a death threat during the disturbance.
Police said there was a protective order preventing Cerros from having contact with his wife.
