MEMORY WALK COOKOUT | Portage
Miller's Senior Living Community invites the public to celebrate National Hot Dog Month at a cookout fundraiser for the Memory Walk for the Alzheimer's Association. The cookout will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 29 at the center, 5911 Lute Road. The menu will include grilled hot dogs with all the trimmings, salads, beverages and ice cream for desert. Proceeds will go toward research into dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Reservations are requested.

STEELWHEELS | Portage
The Portage SteelWheels Car & Bike Show will be Aug. 8, 9 and 10 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. Registration for the Aug. 8 bike show will begin at 6 p.m. Registration costs $5 per bike. Proceeds will benefit soldiers serving overseas and their families. High Noon will perform. A beer garden will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Aug. 8. Registration for the Aug. 9 and 10 car show will be from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9 and 10. Registration is $15 per car. Show times for the car show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10. Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 registered cars. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. Aug. 10. Proceeds from the car show will benefit Jacob's Ladder Pediatric Rehab Center. The Van Dells will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Oakwood Grand Hall at Woodland Park. Tickets for the concert are $15 each.

CUT-A-THON | Portage
Soto's Salon & Day Spa, Inc., 2710 Willowcreek Road, will sponsor a cut-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 30. Haircuts will cost $10. Proceeds will support Susan G. Komen For the Cure in honor of Mary Garza, who splits her time living with a daughter and a sister in Merrillville and Valparaiso. She is battling breast cancer and received a grant from Susan G. Komen For the Cure to pay toward her treatment.

BIKE-A-THON | Hobart
The Baptist Children's Home 28th Annual Bike-a-thon will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at Inland Manor Baptist Church, 630 N. County Line Road. The ride begins at 9 a.m. Walkers will register at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, lunch and snacks along the ride/walk. The route includes a 20-mile ride or 2-mile walk along the Prairie Duneland Trail. Baptist Children's Home is an international ministry caring for children who are orphaned, abused or neglected.

POKER RUN | Michigan City
"Ride To Cure Lupus," a poker run to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., will be Aug. 30. The cost is $10 for the driver and $15 for driver and passenger. T-shirts and tanks cost $10. The poker run will start with registration between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Michigan City Harley, 2968 N. U.S. 421. The five stops on the poker run include Joe's Bar, 2958 W. U.S. 12, Michigan City; Leroy's Hot Stuff, 333 W. U.S. 20, Porter; Ruthie's Central Lounge, 3425 Central Ave., Lake Station; WoJo's Saloon, 391-1 W. U.S. 6, South Haven; and The Coachlite, 361 Calumet Ave., Chesterton. The last bike will return by 4 p.m. The event also includes a live band, beer garden, food and raffles. All vehicles are welcome.

DANCE FUNDRAISER | Portage
Kidworks, LLC, a developmental intervention center in Chesterton that specializes in providing physical, occupational, speech and music therapy to children with special needs, will hold a fundraiser dinner-dance Aug. 23 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing at 8 p.m. The cost is $75 per couple and $40 per individual. This event is for adults, only. The event also includes a silent auction, raffle and cash bar. Proceeds will go toward providing therapy services for low-income and uninsured children.

GOLF OUTING | Highland
The Independent Veterans Society of Indiana, Inc., will hold its first golf outing Aug. 30 at Wicker Park Golf Course, 8554 Indianapolis Blvd. Registration is at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes lunch, dinner, drink tickets and door prizes. Independent Veterans Society of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that helps with assistance, guidance, information and group support for veterans and their families on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

The Portage Township Food Pantry is accepting donations of all home-grown produce, including fresh corn, beans, zucchini, lettuce, carrots and tomatoes. Items can be brought before 10 a.m. Fridays to the food pantry in the back of the Portage Adult Education Center, 5391 Central Ave.

BREAST CANCER BENEFIT | Hammond
A breast cancer benefit in honor of Mary Garza is set for 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 2 at LaRosa's Lounge and Pizzeria, 6817 Indianapolis Blvd. Tickets cost $15 at the door or $10 in advance. CAR WASH | South Haven
The South Haven Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26 on the east side of Burger King, 374 W. U.S. 6. Copies of the auxiliary's cookbook, "Smokin' Recipes," will be available for purchase at the car wash. The cookbooks sell for $10 each. Proceeds will support the auxiliary and community and department events.

RESALE SHOP | South Haven
The Portage Resale Shop, 404 W. U.S. 6, now lists special sales on its Web site, http://portageresaleshop.org/Home_Page.php. Watch for upcoming coupons on the Web site. The resale shop is seeking volunteers to serve as cashiers, to sort through donations and to help with various other jobs. Volunteers can earn "resale dollars" by volunteering a certain number of hours and by recruiting other volunteers. The shop also names a volunteer of the month. The shop's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Portage Resale Shop is a nonprofit organization. The money generated stays within Porter County.

CALENDAR NOMINEES | Crown Point
Nominate a breast cancer survivor for the Pink Ribbon Society's 2009 Breast Cancer Survivors' Calendar. The society will hold its Seventh Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tea on Sept. 28 at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Hobart. One of the highlights of the event each year is the introduction of the calendar guys and gals. Submit the nominee's name, year of diagnosis, personal and/or professional accomplishments, and the things in general that make the person outstanding. Those submitting a nomination should also submit their phone number in case their nominee is chosen. Deadline for nominations is Aug. 1. OLD CAR SHOW | LaPorte
The LaPorte County Historical Society Museum will hold its first Old Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 26 at the museum, 2405 Indiana Ave.. There will be no charge to the public to view the car show on the grounds of the museum, and a reduced admission charge to the museum will be in place for the day. A variety of cars, from antiques to muscle cars, is anticipated. Food will be available on-site. For those wishing to display their vehicles, this is a "show and shine" event for cars and trucks at least 30 years old. A $5 registration fee includes one free museum admission. Other offerings in the works include dash plaques, People's Choice and Participants' Choice trophies, and door prizes.

ROGER COLLINS BENEFIT | Valparaiso
A benefit for Roger Collins will be held from 3 to 11 p.m. July 26 at Valparaiso American Legion Post 94, 4 Monroe St. The event includes a dinner, DJ, raffles and an auction. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 years and younger. Collins has been diagnosed with cancer. Items for the auction and raffles will be accepted.

COMEDY NIGHT | South Haven
South Haven American Legion Post 502 will host a comedy night featuring Chuck Kilgore and "Fryman" on July 26 at the post, 429 W. County Road 750 North. Elly Green Spahn will emcee the event. Doors open at 7 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Ticket includes a complimentary drink and an entry into the drawing for a door prize. DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERS | Valparaiso
The Open Door Social Club is seeking donations of nonperishable food items, cleaning products, household and personal items, or money. The club, housed in the Margaret Stevens House, 402 E. Indiana Ave., is a program of Mental Health America of Porter County. Pantry items will be distributed to adults with mental illness who are living in the community. Volunteers also are needed for the Open Door Social Club. The group is looking for outgoing, encouraging and caring adults or groups to volunteer a few hours each month. The club offers activities and outings for adults with mental illness. The club meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Margaret Stevens House.

Aktion Club of Porter County, in affiliation with Opportunity Enterprises Inc., will hold a food drive during July to benefit the participants of Housing Opportunities, Inc. The Aktion Club is a Kiwanis-sponsored community service club for adults living with a disability. Donations of items such as canned goods, boxed foods, household cleaning supplies, hygiene products, condiments, school supplies and monetary contributions can be dropped off in the main entrance lobby of Opportunity Enterprises, Inc., 2801 Evans Ave. Housing Opportunities, Inc., serves the community through the development and provision of safe, decent and affordable housing and customized support services. The organization serves homeless individuals and families through its existing programs.
