CROWN POINT | Fido and Rover can now have their final resting place in the same cemetery as Crown Point founder Solon Robinson.
At its meeting Wednesday morning, the Crown Point Board of Public Works gave Tom Hawes, director of the city's Historic Maplewood Cemetery, approval to use a northwest corner of the cemetery for the remains of pets.
He will come back before the board to show a design for the pet section that -- along with burial plots -- may include a scattering ground for pets' ashes.
"I'm trying to bring the cemetery out of the 19th century and into the 21st," Hawes said.
Hawes said the pet section would have its own entrance and would be separated from the rest of the cemetery with landscaping.
City Attorney David Nicholls asked Hawes to reconsider his proposed prices for plots because the cemetery is dealing with a limited amount of space for the pets. Hawes had proposed graves that would range from $125 to $350 depending on the size of the grave.
