MUNSTER

Benefit planned for boy fighting cancer

An Evening for Antonio, a fundraising dinner dance and silent auction, will benefit 2-year-old Antonio Ian Moreno, of Munster, who is battling cancer.

The toddler's family and friends, known as The Antonio Ian Moreno Benefit Committee, will sponsor the event from 6:30 p.m. to midnight Jan. 18 at the Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30 in Hobart.

Donations are $100 per person and include a dinner of Chateaubriand with bordelaise sauce and grilled chicken breast, potatoes, vegetables and dessert.

The benefit also features an open bar and live performances by the Together band.

Some of the silent auction items are Marco Island condo vacations; tickets to Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls games; wine baskets; theater tickets and several restaurant gift certificates.

All of the proceeds go to the Antonio Ian Moreno fund. Donations can be made at Citizens Financial Bank,1720 45th Ave., Munster.

NORTHWEST INDIANA

Organization seeking scholarship applicants

The Beta Rho chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa is accepting applications through Jan. 31 for its academic scholarships.

Candidates must be at least a college sophomore and U.S. citizen living in Northwest Indiana or a graduate of a high school in Northwest Indiana. Individuals must have a strong academic record and show good potential within their chosen fields. Applicants must be full-time students, as determined by their college or university. Special scholarships are available in fine art and music.

Clerk-treasurer, council members are sworn in

The town's newest council members and the clerk-treasurer were sworn into office this week.

Magistrate John Sedia conducted the ceremony, in which Democrat Pat Hawrot took the oath of office as Dyer's clerk-treasurer and Democrats Joe Cinko and Connee Trepton were sworn in Wards 1 and 3, respectively.

DYER

Council makes some appointments for '08

Although some board and commission appointments have been delayed until February, the Dyer Town Council filled some seats at a meeting earlier this week.

Councilman Robert Rybicki exercised his option as president to reappoint longtime Stormwater Board member Bill Jackson to a new term. Jackson, a Democrat, currently serves as that board's president.

Former Councilman Bob Block, who just finished serving eight years in Ward 1, was appointed to the Recycling Commission. Jethroe Smith, who currently serves on the Redevelopment Commission, was appointed to the Community Foundation and Community Events panel.

Three council members traditionally sit on the seven-member Plan Commission, and two who sat on the 2007 commission, Block and Paul Hayes, have left office. At Tuesday's meeting, the council appointed Republican Nan Onest, Ward 4, and Connee Trepton in their places. Kramer, who also sat on the commission in 2007, will serve again this year.

HIGHLAND

Police commissioners plan meeting Thursday

The Highland Board of Metropolitan Police Commissioners will meet in executive session at 6 p.m. Thursday at Town Hall.

A study session will be held at 7:15 p.m., followed by the public meeting at 7:30 p.m. The commission will then resume its executive session to discuss a job performance evaluation of an employee.

WHITING

Council reschedules New Year's meeting

The Whiting City Council meets Tuesday in City Hall.

That meeting, at 6:30 p.m., is rescheduled from the New Year's Day holiday.
