SUNDAY BREAKFAST | South Haven

American Legion Post 502 will host a Sunday breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the legion, 429 W. County Road 750 North. This all-you-can-eat breakfast includes biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, eggs, pancakes, hash browns, French toast sticks and drinks. Cost is $6 per person.

POLISH-AMERICAN SOCIETY | Portage

The Polish-American Cultural Society of Northwest Indiana meets Oct. 1 in the Cana Room of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road. Participants may attend one or both topics of discussion: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. - Polish language for beginners of any age; and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. - Polish culture, customs, history, and geography topics as well as intermediate Polish language. The informal group is open to anyone in high school and older. Admission is free, and pre-registration is not required.

BUTTERFLY GROUP | Valparaiso

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is forming a butterfly interest group. The group's first meeting is 1 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Taltree classroom, 71 North 500 West in Valparaiso.. Attendees will be outside while collecting seeds, so they should dress for the weather. Long pants are recommended. The rain date is Oct. 8. RSVP.

Mothers and More of Porter County hosts a fall open house for prospective members at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Sand Creek Country Club. It's a casual gathering. Working and stay-at-home moms are welcome and can bring a friend. RSVP.

OPERA LECTURE | Portage

The second in this season's lectures presented by the Lyric Opera of Chicago at the Portage Public Library is "the Pearl Fishers" by Georges Bizet. The program is at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the library, 2665 Irving St. A trained lecturer will give background information about both the composer and the story, as well as play musical highlights. RUEBEN FEST | Valparaiso

VFW Hayes Post 988 will hold a rueben fest beginning at noon Oct.11 until sold out. Meal is a sandwich, chips and pickle. Dinners are $6 or $6.50 to go. Proceeds benefit local veterans and their families.

Fall fitness classes | Valparaiso

Perpetual Motion Fitness and Sports is registering for its fall term of classes. Classes are offered in gymnastics, cheerleading, sports, acro and tumbling for ages 2 and older. Competitive teams are also forming. The fall term runs from today to Dec. 13. Private lessons are available for cheerleaders or teams looking to improve tumbling.

Comedy night | South Haven

American Legion Post 503 hosts a comedy night beginning at 8 p.m. Oct. 25. Emcee for the event is Chuck Kilgore from Portage, featuring Brian Hicks of the Midwest circuit. Headliner will be Carol Pennington of Cleveland, Ohio. Tickets are on sale now at the post for $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Each ticket purchased will be entered into a door prize drawing. Portage High School has announced fall Field House hours. It has expanded fall hours for public use of the field house and fitness room. Hours are 5:30-7:30 a.m.m Monday through Friday and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

VNA Hospice Choir looking for new voices

The Visiting Nurse Association's Hospice Choir is looking for new members to join the group. The choir rehearses every other Monday evening in Valparaiso. Members learn a cappella pieces to perform at memorial services and in patient rooms at the Arthur B. and Ethel V. Horton VNA Hospice Center. Note reading is not a requirement, but some singing experience is preferred.
