Snow is expected to develop around mid-afternoon today, with blizzard-like conditions and below zero wind chills possible by early Tuesday.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana and Cook and Will counties in Illinois until 6 a.m. Tuesday. A Blizzard Watch has also been issued for the counties and is in effect from 3 p.m. today until 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Casey Sullivan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill., said the snow is expected to hit the South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana sometime between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., with 2- to 3-inches of snow expected by midnight.
While the region isn't expecting too much snow, Sullivan said strong northwest winds reaching speeds of 35 mph overnight could cause blowing and drifting snow, prompting the blizzard watch.
"We'll see if we need to upgrade it to a warning as the storm moves through," Sullivan said.
By noon Tuesday, the winds should drop to 10- to 25-mph, he said.
The strong winds will also bring bitter cold temperatures. Sullivan said temperatures should reach 30 degrees today but will steadily fall overnight as the winds increase.
The winds will send wind chills to -20 degrees by Tuesday morning, Sullivan said.
The low Tuesday morning is expected to by 10, but by sunset, should only be in the single digits.
