Departing prosecutor endorses assistant
Cook County State's Attorney Richard Devine, who is preparing to step down from the post after holding it for nearly a decade, endorsed his ranking deputy yesterday as his choice for his successor.
Devine says he is supporting 46-year-old first assistant State's Attorney Robert Milan, who joined the office as a lawyer 19 years ago. Milan is one of six Democratic candidates who will compete in the Feb. 5 primary.
The winner of the Democratic primary is expected to face Cook County Board member Tony Peraica, a Republican who lost the 2006 election for board president to Todd Stroger.

Cal City man sentenced to 4 years for drugs
A 23-year-old Calumet City man was sentenced Monday to four years in prison after he pleaded guilty to drug possession charges.
Lake County Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell sentenced Sidney Garrett to the agreed upon term.
Prosecutors argued that a confidential police informant in Hammond purchased less than half a gram of cocaine on July 7 from Garrett at a Hammond gas station that was within 1,000 feet of a public park.

GSU offers restorative justice workshop
Restorative justice and conflict management have proven effective and powerful tools in dealing with student discipline in schools. Restorative Practices in Schools is a special, two-day workshop offered at Governors State University on Jan. 25 and 26, and is designed to give participants the knowledge and skills they need to understand and cope with issues that significantly impact schools and the community.
Instructors are Adam Zagelbaum and Jane Nicholson of Governors State University.

King documentary to air on WTTW-TV
"The New Battle," a half-hour documentary by Seth McClellan concerning Martin Luther King Jr. and the Chicago Freedom Movement, will be broadcast 10:30 p.m. Monday on Chicago's public broadcasting station, WTTW.
"The New Battle" uses the comments and observations of participants in the Chicago Freedom Movement in the 1960s to describe what happened and illustrate its effects. McClellan weaves the words of Jesse Jackson, C.T. Vivien, Willie Barrow, and others in with photographs taken during the period and additional footage filmed for the documentary.
McClellan is a documentary filmmaker and adjunct faculty member at Governors State University. He earned his master of fine arts in independent film and digital imaging at GSU.

Alderman seeks residents for a 7th Ward committee
Seventh Ward Alderman Cindi Pallick plans to form a 7th Ward committee for residents to discuss their ideas and concerns.
"I cannot stress enough this is not a support Cindi Pallick committee," she said. "I want people to be able to come together and say this is what's going on over here on Arthur and Memorial drive and get involved with Neighborhood Watches (and other issues)."
