MUNSTER | The Speedway station at the corner of 45th Avenue and Calumet Avenue turned the clock back 26 weeks and was selling premium gasoline at $3.17 per gallon Thursday morning.
Delighted customers filling up thought it might be a Speedway promotion. Others thought maybe the pumps couldn't price gasoline at a higher number.
It wasn't any of that. The reason for the one-hour price cut was more mundane.
"I messed up," a clerk said, just after prices were reset to the correct amount of $4.17 per gallon for premium.
The last time the nationwide average for a gallon of premium gas was $3.17 or below was at the end of October, according to U.S. Energy Information Agency data.
