CHICAGO | Not even the stark reality that Jim Edmonds had two homers out of the four the Cubs belted in a nine-run fourth inning against his White Sox could persuade Ozzie Guillen that he got beat by a worthy player.

"I'm not going to promote a guy hitting .218 and (bleep)," manager Guillen said after the Sox were shellacked by Edmonds and Aramis Ramirez in that huge inning, key to the Cubs' 11-7 victory Saturday, their second in a row against the Sox and 13th in a row at home.

"He just had a good day," Guillen said. "Good for them. I'd rather have him out there rather than have (Alfonso) Soriano. Believe me I do. Jimmy is a veteran player, he knows what he's doing. But Jim's not going to scare me. I will pitch to him any time."

Pitching to Edmonds on Saturday didn't work at all. He became only the third Cub in history to belt two homers in one inning.

Edmonds' first led off the fourth against starter Jose Contreras. The second against lefty reliever Boone Logan one batter after Ramirez finished off Contreras with a three-run homer -- a day after Ramirez destroyed the Sox with two homers, including a game-ender in the ninth.

For good measure, little Mike Fontenot followed Edmonds' first homer with an opposite-field shot into the left-field bleachers.

Edmonds, reaching his 38th birthday, is not supposed to be able to hit southpaws anymore. But even after he has revived his dormant batting stroke with four homers and 16 RBIs in his last 17 games since May 30, Edmonds doesn't feel he's all the way back to his 2000-vintage prime.

"I never feel that way," Edmonds said. "This game humbles you every day and I'm just going to keep trying to go till the season's over."

Still, he appreciated the rarity of his two-homer feat, also accomplished by Mark Bellhorn in 2002 and Sammy Sosa in 1996.

"That's something to remember," Edmonds said. "That's quite a feat. It's not easy to do. It was fun to be a part of that big inning today. This was a great win for us. We play well in this ballpark."

Ramirez also is a big reason the 47-28 Cubs are 31-8 in Wrigley Field.

"I feel pretty good," he said. "The whole team is feeling pretty good now. We beat a tough pitcher in Contreras. He left a lot of splitters up. That's his best pitch."
