FISHERS | Paul Laub called it perhaps jitters for Frontier's softball program.

Whatever it was, it gave his Whiting Oilers a 2-0 lead in Friday night's Class A state semifinal at Hamilton Southeastern. The game was called due to rain and lightning in the bottom of the fourth inning.

It will be restarted today at 9 a.m. Region time, with top-ranked Whiting ahead 2-0.

"Frontier hasn't been on this stage so maybe they had some jitters," Laub said of two plays in the bottom of the third that gave his team the lead.

Victoria Franco was hit by a pitch with one out. Mel Dumezich laced a grounder down the third-base line that was caught by Kendra Collier, who fired the ball into right field. Franco went to third on the play.

Sarah Jansky laid down a bunt and Collier's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, scoring one run. After the play, Jansky began running to second.

Frontier's pitcher and catcher both looked at her, just long enough for Dumezich to score from third.

"Hey, we've got a three-inning game with a two-run lead," Laub said. "We're in pretty good shape. But we've got to be ready to play."

The second semifinal between defending state champion Indianapolis Lutheran (25-4) and Tecumseh (24-4) will start 30 minutes after the end of the Whiting (32-0) and Frontier (26-5) game.

The Class A state finals will be played entirely at Hamilton Southeastern. According to the IHSAA's Web site, the championship is set for 3:30 p.m. today (Region time) at Hamilton Southeastern.

"It's supposed to be hot and both Lutheran's and Tecumseh's coaches were concerned about starting the game too soon after the semifinal. So they're going to decide (Saturday) morning."

Dumezich struck out the first nine Falcons batters and kept them hitless until two outs in the fourth. Nicole Firebaugh's fly ball fell in for a base hit.

Frontier pitcher Kelsey Mullen struck out six of the first seven Oilers batters. Whiting had no hits on Friday night.

Then came the big bottom of the third.

"It's good to have a 2-0 lead in a three-inning game," Laub said.
